STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) made six saves to record her second shutout of the season as the University of Michigan women's soccer team battled to a scoreless tie at No. 4 Penn State Sunday afternoon (Sept. 19).
Michigan (4-2-1, 1-0-1 Big Ten) was outshot for the first time this season, 14-11, but put more shots on goal as Penn State's Emily Oleksiuk was forced to make eight saves to Stewart's six. The Wolverine offensive effort was led by Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) and Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS), who fired three shots each.
The game follows the trend of tight games in the series as the Wolverines and Nittany Lions (3-2-1, 0-0-1 Big Ten) have tied their last three regular-season meetings. The schools played to a 1-1 draw in Ann Arbor last season and a 0-0 tie in State College in 1997. Further, Michigan and Penn State went into a shootout in the 1994 Big Ten Tournament where the Wolverines won 3-1.
Michigan will open a four-game homestand at 4 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 24) when the Wolverines face No. 21 Illinois at U-M Soccer Field. The Wolverines continue the string of home games with Iowa (Sept. 26), Indiana (Oct. 1) and Purdue (Oct. 3).
