ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After a 30-minute fog delay, the opening round of the University of Michigan's Wolverine Women's Golf Invitational was paced by the play of Kent's Jan Dowling and Leigh Ann Griffin as the Golden Flashes took an early four-stroke lead over Ohio University in the first round of the tournament Saturday (Oct. 9) at the U-M Golf Course. The Golden Flashes finished the round with a team total of 316 to the Bobcats' 320.
Southwest Missouri State and host Michigan battled for the third and fourth place positions as they are separated by just one stroke after the Bears' round of 326 to the Wolverines' 327.
Ohio's Heather Fueger holds the overall lead after firing an even-par score of 73. Dowling follows Fueger with her round of 74, and Illinois' Laurin Kanda fired a first-round 77 for the third spot. The shot of the day belonged to Notre Dame's Lauren Fuchs, who holed out her second shot on the par-4 18th for an eagle.
The tournament's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. at the U-M Golf Course.
