Tigers Hand Wolverines First Defeat, 4-1
9/5/1999 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
The Wolverines (2-1) battled hard and made things interesting in the second half when freshman Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) scored at 50:04 to bring Michigan within one goal, 2-1. Kayal, who paced Michigan with five shots, took a pass from Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) and rocketed a shot into the right corner for her second career goal and second goal in as many games.
Michigan could not capitalize on the change in momentum as Missouri (3-1) came right back and answered Kayal's goal 16 seconds later on Nikki Thole's goal. Thole ended the game with a goal and two assists.
Sarah Sallee opened the scoring for Missouri at 14:31. Erin Grimsley, who factored in all four Tiger goals, gave Missouri a 2-0 advantage at 25:35 and then closed the game's scoring on a one-on-one break-away at 82:25.
Michigan returns to action at 4 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 10) to face Arizona State in the Wolverines' home opener at the Michigan Soccer Field.
