ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In front of the largest crowd of the season, the ninth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team pulled off an upset victory over second-ranked Stanford University with a 136-106 decision on Saturday (Jan. 15) at Canham Natatorium.

After Stanford turned in first-place finishers in three of the first four events, the Wolverines rallied back to take seven of the final nine events to pull away with the victory. Michigan improves to 4-2 overall, while Stanford drops to 2-2 on the season. U-M defeated Stanford for the first time since the 1990-91 campaign, ending a streak of five consecutive losses to the Cardinal.

The top individual performance for Michigan was turned in by senior tri-captain Josh Trexler (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), who finished with a team-high two first-place finishes. Trexler, a Big Ten Conference two-time Diver of the Week winner this season, had NCAA zone diving qualifying marks in both the one-meter (295.95) and three-meter (342.60) diving events to take first place in each.

Five other Wolverine swimmers turned in first-place performances in individual competition. Senior tri-captain and All-American Mike McWha (Windsor, Ontario/Kennedy Collegiate Institute) placed first in the second event of the day -- the 800-meter freestyle -- with a time of 8:04.56. Junior All-American Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS) finished first in the 200-meter breaststroke at 2:13.44, while sophomore All-American Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) turned in a time of 2:00.47 in the 200-meter individual medley to take first place.

A pair of freshmen also had first-place efforts, as Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg [Pa.] Academy) finished the 100-meter freestyle in 50.31 seconds and Ryan Earhart (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier HS) had the top time in the 200-meter backstroke (2:00.40).

In relay competition, the team of Siciliano, McWha, senior tri-captain Scott Meyer (Lodi, Calif./Lodi HS) and sophomore Chuck Kennedy (Concord, Calif./Northgate HS) finished in first with a time of 3:25.15.

Also of note was senior Carlos Castillo's (Brigham, Utah/Box Elder HS) efforts in the diving events. Castillo turned in perhaps his best performance as a Wolverine, placing second to Trexler on the one-meter board (264.40) and third in the three-meter diving (280.27).

Head coach Jon Urbanchek's Wolverine squad returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 22, at Purdue. The meet begins at noon.
