Thompson, Trexler Lead Michigan to Victory at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team defeated 23rd-ranked Purdue 138-103 on Saturday (Jan. 22) at the Lambert Pool. With their second straight dual meet victory, the Wolverines improved to 5-2 overall, 2-0 against Big Ten Conference opponents. The Boilermakers fell to 4-2 overall, 2-2 Big Ten.

Junior All-American Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) and senior tri-captain Josh Trexler (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS) led the way for the Wolverines, each winning two individual events. Thompson finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 9:16.78. He also was first in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 4:26.66.

Trexler, a three-time Big Ten Diver of the Week this season, placed first in the one-meter required dives with a score of 188.475. He also had a first-place performance in the one-meter optional dives with an NCAA zone diving qualifying mark of 300.525.

Senior tri-captain Scott Meyer (Lodi, Calif./Lodi HS) led a Michigan 1-2 finish in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 21.32 seconds, with teammate Matt Raines (Owosso, Mich./Corunna HS) placing second (21.66).

A sophomore duo of Chuck Kennedy (Concord, Calif./Northgate HS) and Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) placed first in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively. Freshman Ryan Earhart (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier HS) finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.28.

U-M's next meet is Saturday, Jan. 29, against Indiana at Canham Natatorium. The meet will have two sessions, with the first starting at 10 a.m. and the second beginning at 5 p.m.
