U-M Upends Indiana in Lone Dual Meet of Season

Michigan's most dominant event was the 3,000-meter run as the Wolverines owned the top four places. Wisniewski's winning time was followed by Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ont./St. Clair SS) in 8:18.31, Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) in 8:21.16 and John Mortimer (Londonberry, N.H./Londonberry HS) in 8:22.42.
Michigan's middle-distance group also proved strong with the Wolverines getting wins from Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS) in the 600-meter run (1:19.92) and Cantin in the 800-meter run (1:53.56).
The Maize and Blue sprinters were paced by junior Josh Sellers (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee HS), who came up with a win in the 400-meter dash (49.48). Sophomore Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) also aided the Michigan cause with a pair of runner-up finishes. Okenwa placed second in the 60-meter dash (6.85) and the 200-meter dash (21.88). Sophomore Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS) gave Michigan a win in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.15.
Michigan's field events also provided the Maize and Blue with a pair of first-place finishes. Senior Patrick Johansson (Ramnas, Sweden/Tingralla HS) won the 35-lb. weight throw (53-11 3/4), while sophomore Brent Sheffer (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) won the pole vault (15-11 3/4).
The Wolverines return home next weekend to host the Red Simmons Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
