U-M Wins Five Events at Red Simmons Invitational

Top performances of the meet came from junior Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS), who won the pole vault with a personal best of 17 feet, 1 inch, and senior Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ontario/St. Clair SS) and junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS), who placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run. Cantin (8:04.67) and Wisniewski (8:06.22) both posted provisional-qualifying times for the NCAA Championships.
Coming in first for the Maize and Blue in the short events were sophomore Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS), who ran away with the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.06, and sophomore Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Cali./Morse HS), who took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.65.
Rounding out the victories for Michigan were senior Patrik Johansson (Ramnas, Sweden/Tingralla Gymansiet), who won the 35-lb. weight throw with a heave of 55 feet, 9 1/4 inches, and Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS), who was triumphant in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.14.
The Wolverines will return to action Saturday (Jan. 29) at the Lyons Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind.
