Wolverines Fall at Indiana in Dual Meet

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- In its lone scheduled dual meet of the indoor season, the University of Michigan women's track and field team could not overcome the Indiana Hoosiers, dropping an 84-77 decision on Saturday (Jan. 15). Katie Clifford (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) led Michigan's strong showing the long and middle distance events, capturing both the mile and the 3,000-meter run.

The Wolverines dominated the middle and long distances. Along with Clifford's first-place finishes, Erin White (Battle Creek, Mich./Central HS) claimed second in the mile and the Wolverines recorded 1-2 sweeps in the 600- and 800-meter runs. Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle Secondary) captured the 800-meter run, coming in three seconds ahead of runner-up Erica Murdock (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights HS). Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) teamed with freshman Rachel Sturtz (Traverse, Mich./Traverse HS) for the 1-2 finish in the 600 meters.

Other Michigan winners included Nicole Denamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) in the high jump, Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) in the triple jump and Brandi Bentley (Detroit, Mich./Marian HS), who led a 1-2-3 Wolverine sweep in the long jump. The Wolverines also won the 1,600-meter relay.

Michigan returns to action next Saturday, Jan. 22, when it hosts the Red Simmons Invitational at the U-M Indoor Track Building.
