The 800 meters proved to be Michigan's best event as it owned three of the top six places. Following Schneider was junior Dan Snyder (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS), who placed fourth with a pace of 1:54.16. The final Wolverine to score in the 800 was senior Steve Moffat (Villa Park, Calif./Villa Park HS), who finished sixth with a time of 1:54.94.
Michigan's other event victory came in the distance medley relay as Tom Caughlan (Des Moines, Iowa/Mason City HS), Tony Wisehart (Yellow Springs, Ohio/Bellview HS), Phil Stead (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) and John Butsic (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County HS) combined to run a winning time of 10:07.56. Caughlan ran the open leg of 1,200 meters and was followed by Wisehart in the 400-meter leg, Stead in the 800-meter leg and finally Butsic in the anchor leg of a mile.
The Wolverines also had several third-place finishers as Patrick Johansson (Ramnas, Sweden/Tingralla HS) led Michigan's field events with a third-place finish in the 35 lb. weight throw (56-4 3/4). Pole vaulter Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS), who won the event at the Red Simmons Invitational a week ago, came back to place third (16-0) this week.
In the sprints, sophomore Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS) finished third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.03), while Ravi Smith (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup HS) placed third in the 400-meter dash (49.52). Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) joined his fellow sprinters by finishing third in the 200-meter dash (21.86).
The Wolverines' indoor season continues with a trip to South Bend, Ind., for the annual Meyo Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4-5.
