Cantin Burns Track to Win Meyo Mile at Notre Dame
2/5/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track & Field
Cantin was not the only Michigan distance runner to win an event as fellow senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) won the 5,000-meter run in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:06.76. Following closely behind Lawrence was fellow Wolverine Michael Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS), who placed third, also with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:08.65.
Michigan was paced in the field events by its pole vault duo of Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) and Brent Sheffer (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS). DeWildt won the pole vault for the second time in three weeks, with a height of 16-10. Sheffer also reached a height of 16-10 and placed runner-up to DeWildt. Sheffer's height of 16-10 is a personal best for the Wolverine sophomore.
Michigan sprinters were well represented by sophomore Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS), who placed in the top five in a pair of events. Okenwa finished runner-up in the 200-meter dash with a pace of 21.30, while placing fifth in the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.88.
Michigan continues its indoor season at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships next Friday (Feb. 11) at Mount Pleasant, Mich.
