U-M Hosts Jack Harvey Invitational to Open Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team open its indoor season at the Michigan Indoor Track and Field Building today (Saturday, Jan. 8) with the Jack Harvey Invitational. The Wolverines turned out several top finishes in the non-scoring meet.
Senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) finished second overall in the mile with a time of 4:16.06. Senior team captain and All-American Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ontario/St. Clair SS) ran tightly with Lawrence for third at 4:16.15. Junior cross country All-American Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) ran strong with the front of the pack and placed fourth with a time of 4:17.5.
Wisniewski and Cantin finished 1-2 in the 3,000-meter run, with Wisniewski winning the race in 8:21.13 and Cantin posting a time of 8:25.27.
In the shot put, junior Nick Rogers (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm HS) and sophomore Jason Hoyner (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS) finished 1-2 with throws of 52-11 and 50-2 3/4, respectively.
Sophomore Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS) and fifth-year senior Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) gave commanding performances in the 600-meter dash and 60-meter dash, respectively. Schneider cut the competition by 0.48 seconds for first place in the 600. Okenwa fought hard until the end as he slipped past Eastern Michigan's Olaymi Olatunji in the 60 by 0.09 seconds.
The Wolverines will continue their season in Bloomington, Ind., next Saturday (Jan. 15) at the Indiana Quadrangular.
