Michigan Downs Illinois, Earns Fifth Big Ten Victory

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. C The University of Michigan women's soccer team continued its Big Ten Conference success by defeating Illinois 4-1 on Sunday (Oct. 1) at the Illinois Soccer Field.
Michigan jumped out to an early lead when sophomore Michelle Pesiri (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) scored at 3:23 of the first half. Pesiri took the pass from freshman Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) for Chavez's third point of the weekend.
Illinois answered with a strike at 24:37 of the first half from Emily Brown, but Michigan took the lead back with a goal from Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) at 40:27. Sophomore Tammy Mitchell (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Seaholm HS) and senior Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) were credited with the assists on the Williamson goal.
Michigan continued its offensive attack in the second half, scoring two goals less than two minutes apart. All-America candidate Beitel scored her second goal of the year at 63:59 to put the Wolverines up 3-1. Freshman Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) scored the final goal of the game 81 seconds later (65:20) to give Michigan its fifth victory against just one loss in the Big Ten.
Freshman goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) earned the win in net for the Wolverines. Grech made 10 saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of action. The victory gives Grech her fourth win of the season.
