Michigan Drops Oakland, Picks Up Fourth Straight Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team scored two goals 22 seconds apart with less than four minutes remaining in the game to defeat Oakland University 3-1 Wednesday (Oct. 1) at the U-M Soccer Field.
With the score tied 1-1, U-M freshman Amber Wilson (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West HS) found the back of the net at 86:30 for her second goal of the game. Freshman Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) and senior Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) assisted on the Wilson game-winner.
Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) put the game out of the Golden Grizzlies' reach with her tally 22 seconds later (86:52). Chavez earned her second assist of the evening on the Crumpton goal.
Wilson opened the second half with the first of her two goals at 56:24. Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) set up the Wilson score as she fed a pass to senior Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS), who found Wilson alone in the left corner of the box. The Wolverines' lead was short-lived as Oakland's Debbie Cartmell slid a shot past Wolverine goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) just three minutes later.
Michigan and Oakland played a rough first half with Michigan outshooting Oakland 15-4. But neither the Wolverines nor Golden Grizzlies could capitalize on their scoring opportunities as the teams played to a 0-0 halftime tie.
Stewart earned her third victory in net for the Wolverines, improving her record to 3-3-0. The senior goalkeeper made six saves and allowed one goal.
The Wolverines (7-4, 5-1 Big Ten) are on the road Sunday (Oct. 8) as they travel to East Lansing for a 1 p.m. game against Big Ten Conference rival Michigan State.
