Langfeld Leads Wolverines Past Merrimack in Alaska

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Senior forward Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) notched his second multi-point game of the season and helped the second-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Merrimack tonight (Friday, Oct. 13) in the first round of the Johnson Nissan Classic. Langfeld scored the first goal of the game and then added two assists on his way to earning Player of the Game honors.
The Wolverines (1-0-2) started off slowly, hitting the post twice in their first four shots and falling behind 2-1 after the first period. However, the full moon on Friday the 13th would have little effect on the rest of the game. Michigan scored two goals in the second period to take the lead for good. On the first of the two goals, Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) fired a shot from high in the slot and it hit Langfeld in the arm and fell to the right side of the net where Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) was waiting to smash it home.
Michigan then scored the go-ahead goal with just over a minute remaining in the period with a display of the team's speed. Breaking loose with a pass from Langfeld, Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) skated down the left side of the rink and fired a shot on Merrimack goaltender Tom Welby. The rebound came out to Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.), who wristed a shot which found the back of the net.
The Wolverines scored their third consecutive goal to secure the lead just over eight minutes into the final period. On the goal by John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), freshman Dave Wyzgowski (North Street, Mich.) earned his first career point with an assist.
In net, Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) stopped 18 of 20 shots for his first win of the year. For Merrimack (0-1-0), Welby stopped 30 shots in the loss.
Michigan returns to the ice tomorrow (Oct. 14) at approximately 7:05 p.m. ADT (11:05 p.m. EDT) to face the host team, University of Alaska Anchorage, in the final game of the Johnson Nissan Classic.
