ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team turned in a fifth-place performance in its Wolverine Interregional meet Sunday (Oct. 15) at the U-M Golf Course. Texas finished first in the 8,000-meter race with 77 points, followed by St. Francis (91), No. 20 Washington (94), UCLA (115) and the Wolverines (121).
Michigan junior Mark Pilja's (Naperville, Ill./North HS) finished first with a 24:42 clocking, 11 seconds ahead of the remainder of the pack. Pilja's effort gave him the 10th fastest time ever on the course, and it marks the fifth consecutive year that a U-M runner has won the Wolverine Interregional. Pilja, a two-time Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week, has now won each of the last three meets in which he has competed.
Freshman Tom Greenless (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) also turned in a top-20 effort, finishing in 25:44 to earn 17th place. Junior Tom Caughlan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Mason City HS) finished in 26:06 to place 30th.
The Maize and Blue returns to action on Friday (Oct. 20) at the Eastern Michigan Open. The meet begins at 4 p.m.
