Matzka's Late Goal Gives Berenson 300th CCHA Victory

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Scott Matzka's (Port Huron, Mich.) goal with 1:18 left in regulation Sunday night (Oct. 22) gave the University of Michigan ice hockey team a 4-3 win at Bowling Green and awarded U-M head coach Red Berenson his 300th regular-season Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory.
The win, coupled with Friday's (Oct. 20) 6-1 victory over the Falcons, gave the Wolverines a sweep of the only two games scheduled between the teams this season. Michigan improves to an unbeaten 4-0-2 (2-0-0 CCHA) on the season, including a four-game winning streak.
With the win, Berenson joins Michigan State head coach Ron Mason (461 CCHA regular-season wins) as the only coaches in the history of the CCHA to reach the 300-win plateau in a career.
Michigan, ranked fourth by College Hockey Online, opened the game with a goal by Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) just 28 seconds into the game. The Wolverines dominated the period, outshooting the Falcons 20-4. Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) scored a power-play goal, his second in as many games, seven minutes into the contest to give Michigan a 2-0 lead. However, Bowling Green found its way onto the scoreboard when Greg Day scored his first goal of the night to make the score 2-1 Michigan after the first period.
Langfeld then opened the second period with a goal just 23 seconds into the stanza. Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) earned his second assist of the game, winning a faceoff and directing the puck to Langfeld. The collaboration gave Langfeld and Hilbert each his fourth multi-point game of the season, and Langfeld now has scored in the last four games (4-5-9).
Play was briefly interrupted with 2:38 remaining in the second period when David Wyzgowski's (North Street, Mich.) shot was deflected upward, hit the ceiling and caused one of the fluorescent lights in the arena to fall to the ice and shatter behind the goal. Play resumed after the arena staff cleared the shattered light from the ice.
Bowling Green (0-4-0, 0-2-0 CCHA) came out hard in the third. Day scored two goals to complete his hat trick and tie the game at 3-3 with five minutes remaining in the game. Michigan responded with several shots on goal before Matzka connected on Hilbert's pass for the game winner.
Michigan netminder Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) played well in net, stopping 15 shots which mostly came in quick flurries in the low crease. For the Falcons, Tyler Masters stopped 40 shots in the loss.
Michigan returns home for a weekend series with Miami (Ohio) starting on Friday (Oct. 27) at 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
