ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The third-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated Miami (Ohio) 3-2 Friday night (Oct. 27) at Yost Ice Arena in front of a crowd of 6,322 on Parents Night. The Wolverines converted three of five power-play chances, including two in the third period, and extended their winning streak over the RedHawks to nine games, dating back to February 1998.
With the score tied 1-1 entering the final period, Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) fired a shot from the left point which tucked under the top left corner of the net past Miami goalie David Burleigh to put the Wolverines in front for good. The goal was the first of Komisarek's collegiate career. Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) gave Michigan some breathing room with a power-play tally just 3:57 later to make the score 3-1. Komisarek took a shot from the blue line which hit the right post, but Kosick was able to gather the rebound and flip a backhand shot past Burleigh.
Miami (1-3-1, 0-1-0 CCHA) cut the Wolverine lead to 3-2 with just 2:55 left in the contest when Gregor Krajnc won the face-off in the Michigan zone and found Greg Hogeboom who beat Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.). The RedHawks pulled Burleigh with 1:16 remaining in the game in favor of an extra attacker but were unable to tie the contest.
Michigan (5-0-2, 3-0-0 CCHA) opened the scoring midway through the first period on Andy Hilbert's (Howell, Mich.) first power-play goal of the season. With the RedHawks in the middle of a line change, Hilbert took a pass from Blackburn at the Miami blue line before firing a slap shot from the right point past netminder Burleigh. In addition to the goal, Hilbert picked up two assists during the game, and he now leads the Wolverines in scoring with 13 points on the season.
Miami tied the game 1-1 at the 12:38 mark of the second period on a power-play goal from Jason Deskins. The RedHawks' Ken Marsh passed from the left boards to Deskins just inside the U-M blue line. Deskins' slap shot found its way through a screen and past Blackburn to put Miami on the board.
The Wolverines turned in a strong defensive effort, limiting the RedHawks to just 16 shots on goal during the contest. Blackburn finished with 14 saves and increased his record to 5-0-2, while his counterpart Burleigh turned away 20 U-M shots but suffered the loss and dropped to 0-2-1. Blackburn assist on Hilbert's goal in the first period gave the junior netminder his sixth career point.
The Wolverines and RedHawks will finish out the weekend series Saturday (Oct. 28) at Yost Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the power play ... "When point shots get through, the power play is effective. (Mike) Komisarek did a good job tonight on the power play. He had a major impact on [our last two] goals. Tonight was his first goal, and it was a big goal."
On the intensity of the game ... "Most of the time, it was a battle. It was CCHA hockey ... man-on-man battles. Our defense hit more tonight and used their size and weight. It was a war, and nobody could really break it open."
Sophomore Forward Andy Hilbert
On the tough play ... "It was a battle out there. Miami's style is clutch-and-grab. It was a battle in the corners. It was a tough game. We have to win the one-on-one battles, and the battles in the corners. After that, the goals will come."
Freshman Defenseman Mike Komisarek
On his first collegiate goal ... "It felt amazing. To hear the crowd ... I can't put in words. We've been working on that play all week, and I missed the net about 15 times and hit it once. I was the happiest kid in the rink."
