Beam Reaches Semis at ITA Region IV Championships

MADISON, Wis. -- University of Michigan junior men's tennis player Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) has reached the singles semifinals at the ITA Region IV Championships held at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Center. Beam, the 14th-seeded player in singles competition, will face 10th-seeded Thomas Haug from Minnesota on Monday morning (Oct. 30) in the semifinals.
Beam reached the semifinals by upsetting No. 2-seeded Jason Marshall of Purdue in quarterfinals (7-6, 4-6, 6-2). Beam opened with a first-round bye, then proceeded to win three consecutive matches to reach the quarterfinals. He defeated Purdue's Scott Mayer in the second round (6-2, 6-2), posted a three-set victory (7-5, 5-7, 6-1) over Minnesota's Tyson Parry in the third round and upset No. 5 seed Javier Taborga of Notre Dame in the fourth round (7-6, 4-6, 6-4).
Junior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) opened the tournament with a pair of victories before losing 6-1, 6-1 in the third round to No. 2 seed Jason Marshall of Purdue. Novak upset No. 22 seed Jason Pressell of Ball State in second-round action (6-3, 7-6) and opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Notre Dame's Andrew Laflin in the first round.
Junior Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) split two matches at the tournament, beating Ball State's Chris Varga in the first round (7-6, 6-4) before losing to 18th-seeded Mike Kosta of Illinois in three sets during second-round action (6-7, 6-4, 6-2).
In doubles action, the Wolverines sent two teams into competition, with Beam and McCain reaching the third round before losing 9-7 to Tyson Parry and Jon Svensson of Minnesota. The 11th-seeded duo opened with a first-round bye and proceeded to beat Iowa's Waters and Wilson by an 8-5 score before suffering the third-round defeat.
