Beam Drops Semifinal Match at ITA Region IV Meet

MADISON, Wis. -- University of Michigan junior men's tennis player Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) had his title aspirations come to an end at the ITA Region IV Championships Monday (Oct. 30), losing 6-4, 6-2 to 10th-seeded Thomas Haug of Minnesota in the semifinals. The tournament boasting the top 128 singles players in the region was held at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Center (Oct. 27-30).

Beam reached the semifinals by pulling a pair of upsets, beating No. 2-seeded Jason Marshall of Purdue in the quarterfinals (7-6, 4-6, 6-2) and bettering No. 5 seed Javier Taborga of Notre Dame in the fourth round (7-6, 4-6, 6-4). He defeated Purdue's Scott Mayer in the second round (6-2, 6-2) and posted a three-set victory (7-5, 5-7, 6-1) over Minnesota's Tyson Parry in the third round prior to the upsets. The 14th-seeded player in singles competition, Beam finished with a 4-1 tournament record.
