EVANSTON, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team played its final road contest of the season on Sunday (Oct. 29) against Northwestern, and it was a historic one. The Wolverines picked up their first Big Ten Conference victory as a varsity program with a 2-1, double-overtime win. Senior Ryan Yoder (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit HS) gave U-M the memorable victory with a header off of a corner kick at the 118:00 mark.
Northwestern (0-15-1, 0-5 Big Ten) struck first in the game when Dan Doman took a loose ball 10 yards out and slipped it past Brad King (Portage, Mich./Northern HS) for the early 1-0 lead. The Wildcats hung on to the lead into halftime.
As the two teams battled back and forth after the recess, Michigan (6-8, 1-4 Big Ten) finally got the break it was looking for to score. Senior Will Purdy (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett Catholic HS) tied the game off a rebound from a direct kick with 74:12 on the clock. The game stayed tied at the end of regulation, and Michigan headed to overtime for the fifth time this season.
The Wolverines' high-pressure defense kept the Wildcats on their heels all afternoon, limiting them to only four shots on goal. That defense allowed the Maize and Blue the opportunity to counter many offensive attacks, and set up the game-winning header by Yoder in the second overtime off of a corner kick to win the match.
The Wolverines' next match is against Ohio State on Saturday (Nov. 4) at 1 p.m. on Elbel Field. It is the last regular-season game for Michigan, and U-M will honor its seniors.
