Beam, Jackson Advance to Big Ten Singles Round of 16

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan junior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) posted a pair of victories today (Saturday, Jan. 13) to advance at the Big Ten Conference Men's Tennis Singles Championship at the Varsity Tennis Center. The pair will begin round-of-16 competition Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., with the hopes of reaching Monday's championship match.
Beam, the tournament's fourth seed, opened with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Purdue's Dan Swan in the first round. He advanced to the round of 16 with a second-round win against Minnesota's Jon Svensson (6-7, 6-0, 2-1 retired).
Jackson advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Michigan State's Eric Simonton in the second round. He posted a 6-3, 7-6 first-round upset over ninth-seeded Scott Mayer of Purdue.
Junior Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) upset ninth-seeded Ian Arons of Indiana in the first round (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) before falling in another three-set match to Dustin Friedman of Wisconsin (3-6, 6-1, 6-4) in the second round. He will begin consolation-round action tomorrow morning.
