Powers' Hat Trick Helps Wolverines Maul Chippewas

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team destroyed Central Michigan 8-0 on a miserably cold Saturday afternoon (Oct. 7) at Ocker Field. Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) recorded her first career hat trick in the Wolverines' 12th consecutive victory.
"It was a fun game despite the weather," said Powers. "Scoring goals is always fun; it's better to put in three than one and I was fortunate enough to have a lot of opportunities today."
The Maize and Blue got off to a fast start, scoring three goals by Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) and Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) in the first seven minutes of play.
Rounding out the scoring for the Wolverines were Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, S. Australia/Westminister) and Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS). Goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) made one save to record her second shutout of the season.
"We executed our corners extremely well today and had great efforts from [Jessica] Rose and Kristi Gannon," said head coach Marcia Pankratz. "I'm glad our girls didn't overlook Central to the big games we have coming up."
The fifth-ranked Wolverines (14-1, 4-0 Big Ten) have a tough road ahead with the next three games on the road against teams ranked in the top six in the country -- No. 4 North Carolina, No. 3 Wake Forest and No. 6 Penn State. The Maize and Blue will face North Carolina on Friday (Oct. 13) at 2 p.m. at Francis E. Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C., looking to avenge a 4-2 loss earlier this season at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
