EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered its second loss in Big Ten Conference play, falling 1-0 at Michigan State on Sunday (Oct. 8) at Old College Field. The loss marks the first time since 1994 the Spartans have defeated Michigan. Despite the loss the Wolverines are still in the championship hunt with a 5-2-0 league record.
The Wolverine offense outshot Michigan State 15-9, with 10 shots coming in the first half. However, Michigan could not capitalize as Spartan goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman earned her third consecutive shutout. Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) led the Wolverines with five shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) played all 90 minutes for the Wolverines, making one save and allowing the lone Spartan goal.
The Wolverines have a critical home series next weekend as defending Big Ten regular-season champion Penn State comes to Ann Arbor on Friday (Oct. 13). Michigan will then play host to Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 15).
