COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team closed out its inaugural season on Thursday (Nov. 9) with a 2-1 loss in double overtime to Penn State in the first round of the Big Ten Conference Championship. In a defensive game throughout, both teams scored goals with less than seven minutes to go in regulation, forcing overtime. This marked the second time this season Michigan took PSU into overtime, with a 2-1 OT loss back on Sept. 23 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The first half was dominated by defense for both teams. Michigan goalkeeper Brad King (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) had two saves in the period, and the Wolverines' backfield successfully defended three corner kicks by the Nittany Lions (12-5-2) to head into the locker room with a 0-0 tie.
The Wolverines (6-10) came out of halftime with more offensive firepower and aggression. Michigan had its first corner kick opportunity of the day, and three shots on goal, putting pressure on PSU's defense. However, the Maize and Blue also racked up three yellow cards for the half, in addition to a red card on freshman Kevin Taylor (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) at the 57:33 mark that forced U-M to play a man down for the remainder of the match.
With 83:20 expired, the Nittany Lions finally struck first when John Fischer scored off a rebound past King for the 1-0 lead. The lead would not remain long, as senior Steve Huber (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) quickly tied the game (84:53) on a header from a free kick by freshman Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS).
The first extra period was controlled once again by each team's defense. The teams combined for two shots for the 15 minutes, and neither team had a corner kick or a save. In the second extra frame, both teams each had a scoring chance with a shot apiece on goal, but at 116:01 it was Derek Potteiger of Penn State who ended the match from 18 yards out for the game-winning goal.
