Despite all the Wolverine victories, it was senior Lisa Ouellet's (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle SS) runner-up finish in the 800-meter run that highlighted the Michigan efforts. Ouellet's time of 2:08.73 is a NCAA provisional qualifying time and betters her previous Big Ten season-best time of 2:10.69.
Michigan's sprinters were led by senior Maria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception HS), who was the only Michigan athlete to come away with two wins. Brown won the 60-meter dash with a pace of 7.55 and added a win in the 200-meter dash (24.89). Brown also ran the anchor leg on Michigan's victorious 4x200-meter relay team. Michigan's other sprint victory came from freshman multi-event athlete Tanisha Williams (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS), who won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.62.
Ouellet was not the only Wolverine to shine in the middle distances as Erica Murdock (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights HS) came through with a Michigan season-best 1:33.04 in the 600-meter run. Michigan's top three 4x400-meter relay teams took the top three spots in that event.
The Wolverines were equally impressive in the field events as they walked away with four wins in six field events. NCAA provisional qualifier Brandi Bentley (Detroit, Mich./Marian HS) won another long jump (20-6 1/4), while freshman Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS) won the triple jump (38-8 1/4). Michigan won both throwing events as April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) won the shot put (44-8 3/4) and Julie Presley (Claremont, Calif./Claremont HS) won the weight throw (50-6 1/4).
Michigan travels to Minneapolis, Minn., next weekend for the 2000 Big Ten Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 26-27) on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
