Ouellet Leads Wolverines by Winning 800-Meter Run Title
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team earned its second individual conference crown en route to a fifth-place finish at the 2000 Big Ten Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Wolverines, looking for their third consecutive Big Ten indoor team championship, finished fifth with 77 points but were only three points out of third place as just five points separated third place from seventh. Indiana won the conference title with 150 points.
Middle distance ace Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle SS) earned her initial Big Ten individual title with a win in the 800-meter run at a pace of 2:11.20. Ouellet led a Michigan trio in the 800 meters in what proved to be Michigan's best event of the Championships. Junior Erin White (Battle Creek, Mich./Central HS) followed Ouellet with a third-place finish (2:13.03), while senior Erica Murdock (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights HS) placed fifth (2:15.39).
The Wolverines also placed three scorers in the 600-meter dash as Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) led that trio by placing fourth (1:33.24). Tamika Craig (Inkster, Mich./Robichaud HS) finished seventh (1:35.97) and Ursula Taylor (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) placed eighth (1:36.24).
Michigan's sprinters were paced by Maria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception HS), who placed fifth (7.48) in the 60-meter dash and seventh (24.91) in the 200 meters. Joining Brown as a point scorer for the sprinters was Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS), who finished sixth in the 60-meter dash (8.61).
Katie Clifford (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) and Katie Ryan (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS), both of whom scored in the 3,000-meter run on the first day of the Championships, came back to place in the 5,000-meter run as well. Clifford finished sixth with a pace of 17:01.06, while Ryan placed eighth with a time of 17:04.10.
In the field events, Brandi Bentley (Detroit, Mich./Marian HS) finish seventh in the triple jump (37-9 1/4) one day after winning her second straight long jump title. Phillips scored in her second event of the meet in the triple jump as well, with a sixth-place finish (38-7 1/2). Michigan's scorers were rounded out by Nicole Denamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS), who notched a fourth-place finish in the high jump (5-7).
N O T E S
Lisa Ouellet is Michigan's second Big Ten indoor champ in the 800-meter run in three years. Sarah Hamilton (1996-99) helped Michigan to its 1998 indoor team championship by winning the 800-meter run at that meet. Dating back to 1991, a Michigan athlete has won five of the last 10 conference titles in the indoor 800 meters.
