Men's Tennis Heads West
After a week off, the Michigan men's tennis team will return to the court for the Great Northwest Shootout hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. In addition to the Wolverines and Huskies, Northwestern and Tulsa will participate in the four-team competition. Michigan will face Tulsa Friday afternoon (Feb. 11) and the winner/loser of Northwestern and Washington Saturday (Feb. 12).
Michigan Looks to Collect Win No. 900
With a pair of victories to open the dual match season, Michigan enters this weekend's matches needing one victory to collect the 900th win in the 103-year history of University of Michigan men's tennis program. The Wolverines have compiled an 899-351-14 record in 103 seasons and claimed a Big Ten Conference-record 36 team crowns (next closest current school is Illinois with 10 titles).
Michigan vs. Tulsa
This will be the fourth meeting between Michigan and Tulsa, with the Wolverines winning all three previous contests. The last meeting between the two schools came during the 1993-94 season, a 5-0 victory by the Wolverines at the Tennessee Volunteer Classic. Prior to that season, Michigan and Tulsa met twice at the Corpus Christi Team Tournament in the early 1980s (5-4 win during 1981-82 season and 6-3 victory during the 1983-84 campaign).

Michigan vs. Washington
This would be the first matchup between the two programs. The Wolverines have a 7-21 overall record against Pacific-10 Conference schools.
Michigan vs. Northwestern
Should the Wolverines match up with Northwestern, this would be the 82nd meeting between the Big Ten Conference foes all-time. Michigan holds a 57-23-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Wildcats. The two schools split last year's matches, with the Wolverines winning the regular-season showdown 6-1 but the Wildcats posted a 4-3 win at the Big Ten Championship (both matches were played at the Varsity Tennis Center).
Wright Eyes 15th Win
Senior No. 1 singles player Matt Wright (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate HS) heads into the Great Northwest Shoot-out looking to secure his 15th win of the season. Wright leads the team in victories (14-4 record) and winning percentage (.778), while compiling a 2-0 dual match mark. He boasts an impressive 10-2 record against regional opponents and is ranked No. 35 in the ITA national singles rankings. Wright has won 10 of his last 12 matches. Wright has a 68-44 career singles record and is 52-41 in doubles competition.
Long Second in Wins
Senior co-captain John Long (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) ranks second on the team with 11 singles victories this season (11-6 overall record). Long has a 1-1 record at No. 2 in the dual match lineup and has an impressive 7-4 mark against regional opponents. He has teamed with fellow senior co-captain Brad McFarlane (Kingston, Ontario/Bayridge Secondary HS) to post a 5-2 record and a 2-0 dual mark at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. They are tied for the individual team lead with 6-3 overall doubles records.
Beam Collects 30th Win
Sophomore Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) heads into this weekend's Great Northwest Shoot-out after collecting his 30th career singles victory against DePaul's Maciek Jozwiak (1-6, 6-2, 6-2). Beam has a 30-20 career singles mark and boasts an impressive 10-5 record this season. He has a 2-0 dual match record at the No. 4 singles spot and has won 10 of his last 12 matches. Beam is currently second on the team in overall singles wins (10), winning percentage (.667) and regional victories (8-3) this season.
Cox Nears 35 Wins
Sophomore Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) needs victories in both matches this weekend to reach 35 in his career. Cox has a 7-5 overall record this season, but is 2-0 in dual match action at the No. 5 singles slot. He has a 33-11 career record and a 21-2 career dual match mark. In addition to his singles prowess, Cox has turned his attention to doubles play this season. He has teamed with senior Ron Nano (Great Neck, N.Y./South HS) at the No. 3 spot, compiling a 3-2 overall record and 1-1 dual match record. Cox has tallied a 6-6 career doubles mark.
McCain Eyes 25th Career Win
Sophomore Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) enters this weekend's Great Northwest Shoot-out needing one singles victory for the 25th of his career. McCain has a 24-20 career singles record and is 7-4 this season. He has jumped out to a 2-0 dual match record at the No. 3 spot and is 5-2 against regional opponents. McCain and Wright team to form the Wolverines No. 1 doubles tandem, boasting a 5-3 overall record and 2-0 dual match mark.
Next Week
The Wolverines return to the Varsity Tennis Center against cross-town rival Eastern Michigan. Michigan and Eastern Michigan will hit the courts Friday evening (Feb. 18), beginning at 6 p.m. The Wolverines have a commanding 18-2 advantage in the all-time series between the two programs.
