This Week for Michigan
The sixth-ranked Wolverines head west to compete for the Jessop-Whittier Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic. The event takes place in Misson Bay, with the spectators gathering at Crown Point Shores Park in San Diego, Calif. Michigan has participated in the regatta each of the previous three seasons, with the first varsity eight placing in the top five the last two years. Michigan will get to row against Virginia for the second consecutive week, as the two teams are paired in the teams' first heat. The other first varsity eight schools at the event are California, Clemson, Duke, Michigan State, Oregon State, San Diego State, Southern California, Washington, Washington State and Wisconsin.
The Schedule
The first varsity eight is in the first of two heats of the Jessop-Whittier Cup at the Crew Classic and races at 8:20 a.m. PST on Saturday (April 1). The second varsity eight is competing in the Women's JV division and rows at 10:10 a.m., the second of three heats. The novice eight boat rows at 11:30 a.m. Based on the results of the heats, Michigan's boats will advance to the petite and grande finals on Sunday (April 2) with 9:20 a.m. PDT being the earliest any Michigan team would race.
The Forecast
The weather is forecast as highs in the mid 60s, lows of about 55 and partly cloudy both days.
Last Year at the San Diego Crew Classic
Michigan finished as the top Big Ten Conference team, finishing fifth in the Jessop-Whittier Cup competition. Washington won the event, finishing 10 seconds ahead of the Wolverines. U-M's second varisty eight won the petite final, finishing nearly a second faster than Ohio State.
Michigan in the Polls
Michigan's crew is ranked sixth in the preseason USRowing National Collegiate Rowing Coaches Poll (Feb. 16). Brown University, the defending national champion, is ranked No. 1.
