ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior student-athletes Elizabeth Kampfe (Decatur, Ill./Douglas MacArthur HS) and Rob Renes (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa HS), outstanding students in the classroom and All-America competitors in their respective sports, have been named the recipients of the 1999-2000 Michigan Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor.
The Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor is presented annually to the graduating male and female student-athlete at each conference institution who has attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship and athletics. Kampfe and Renes will be honored at the April 10 Academic Achievement Awards Reception sponsored by the U-M Athletic Department and Michigan Alumni Association.
Kampfe, a distance runner with the cross country and track and field teams, will graduate from the University's Division of Kinesiology with a degree in sports management and communications. A three-time GTE Academic All-District IV At-Large Second-Team award winner (two for track, one for cross country), Kampfe has earned places on the Academic All-Big Ten Conference cross country and track teams, and is a three-time all-academic team pick by the Cross Country Coaches Association of America.
Twice named Michigan's Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Kampfe was the 1999 recipient of the Wolverine Athletics' Caldwell Track and Field Endowed Scholarship. She has been accepted to the MBA program at the University of Illinois for fall 2000.
Kampfe ran to All-America honors in cross country (1997), indoor track (1998) and outdoor track (1998). She was the 1997 NCAA regional cross country medalist after a runner-up finish at the Big Ten Championship, and has claimed all-conference first- and second-team awards in both cross country and track.
Renes, a nose tackle with the Wolverine football team, will graduate from the Michigan School of Education with a degree in secondary education. A three-time GTE Academic All-District IV award winner, Renes was selected to the 1999 GTE Academic All-America First Team and named a National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete. He has twice been awarded the football team's Dr. Arthur Robinson Student-Athlete award. He is the first U-M football player to earn four Academic All-Big Ten citations.
A four-year letterwinner, Renes was Michigan's starting nose tackle for three seasons, finishing with 151 tackles (98 solo, 53 assists). He was named to The Sporting News All-America First Team in 1999, and was a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award. Renes earned All-Big Ten recognition two seasons, making the conference first team in 1999 and second team in 1998. He was also named the Wolverines' top defensive lineman in each of the last two seasons.
Both Kampfe and Renes have been active in the community, making visits to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and local elementary schools, as well as participating in several other Michigan Athletic Department-sponsored projects.
