DeWildt Wins Pole Vault at Alex Wilson Invitational
3/4/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track & Field
Although the Wolverines were unable to improve their standing for the NCAA Championships, the Maize and Blue did earn one event victory. In fact, the Wolverines owned the top two spots in the pole vault, with Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) earning the victory with a vault of 17-0 3/4. DeWildt's Michigan teammate Brent Sheffer (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) was right on DeWildt's heels with a second-place finish based on his vault of 16-6.
Junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) represented Michigan's distance corps with a pair of top-four finishes. Wisniewski placed fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:08.43, which slightly improves upon his previous NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:08.69. Wisniewski also competed in the 3,000-meter run and finished third in that race with a time of 8:22.7.
Michigan travels to Fayetteville, Ark. for the 2000 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships (March 10-11).
N O T E S
Because Notre Dame's track is oversized, the NCAA converts the times, which are run on that track. As a result, Mike Wisniewski's time of 14:08.43 in the 5,000-meter run will be converted to 14:10.28 when the NCAA Performance list is updated. Wisniewski will remain ranked no higher than 17th in the country following this weekend.
Mike Wisniewski is hoping to make it a trio of Michigan distance runners at the NCAA Championships if his time in the 5,000-meter run gets him in. He would join Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ont./St. Claire SS), who is automatically qualified in the mile run, and Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ont./East Northumberland HS), who is a virtual lock in the 5,000-meter run, with the ninth-best time (14:05.40) in the nation in that event prior to this weekend's action.
Charles DeWildt is the only other Wolverine to be a NCAA provisional qualifier this season. His pole vault of 17-2 1/4 is ranked 24th in the country.
