SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The sixth-ranked University of Michigan rowing team advanced each of its three boats to their respective Grande Finals at the San Diego Crew Classic after the first day of rowing Saturday (April 1).
The Wolverines' first varsity eight boat advanced to the Grande Final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup after beating second-ranked Virginia for the second consecutive week. Michigan jumped out to an early lead in the first 500 meters and held off the opposition to win the heat. Washington and California, both tied for fourth in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll (Feb. 16), took first and second, respectively in the other heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup. The Grande Final starts at 2 p.m. PDT tomorrow (Sunday, April 2).
Michigan's second varsity eight finished second to Washington in the second of three second varsity eight heats. The Wolverines fell behind early but closed the gap over the course of the race, finishing just 0.35 seconds behind the Huskies. The next closest boat, Texas, was over 18 seconds behind Michigan. Oregon State and Virginia won the other two heats of the event. The Grande Final for the second varsity eight is 11:10 a.m. tomorrow.
In the novice eight race, Michigan defeated Washington State by 0.19 seconds in the final of four heats to advance to the Grande Final tomorrow at 10:50 a.m. The Wolverines fell behind and were in third place after the first 500 meters. However, the boat made up the difference in the next segment and was in first at the 1,000-meter mark. California, Washington and Wisconsin won the other three heats.
Last season, Michigan's first varsity eight finished fifth in the Jessop-Whittier Cup, while the second varsity eight won the Petite Final of the second varsity eight race.
