MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team kicked off the championship portion of its schedule in the rainy first day of the Big Ten Conference Championships today (Friday, April 28) at the University of Wisconsin. The 11-team field was able to get through the first 18 holes before an hour-and-a-half rain delayed the second 18.
Despite the delay, the Wolverines fired an opening round 305 to sit tied for seventh and closed out with a 304 to finish the first day in eighth place with a 609 total, which is their second best 36-hole total of the season.
Junior Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS) used a team qualifier to make the championship squad and showed she was deserving on the opening day as she led the Wolverines with a 148 first round total to sit tied for ninth overall. She fired back-to-back career-best rounds with a 73 and 75. Sophomore Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./North HS) followed suit with strong rounds of her own as she is tied for 22nd after carding a 145 after rounds of 75 and 76.
Purdue fired a Big Ten Championship-record 287 in the opening round and continued in the second with a 289 for a 576 first-day total. The old mark was 292 by Indiana in 1998. The Boilermakers have a 16-shot lead over Ohio State, which is second with a 592.
The Boilermakers' Stacy Orschell fired the lowest score ever at the Big Ten Championship with a 67 in the first round. She followed that with a 74 for a 141 total. She sits tied for first with teammate Kari Damron, who also broke the Big Ten individual score record with a 68 in the first round. She carded a 73 in the second round to equal Orschell's 141. The old record was 69 held by Cathy Kratzert of Ohio State in 1983.
Michigan will continue to do battle with the conference as the Big Ten Championships continue Saturday (April 29) with 18 holes beginning at 9 a.m. CDT. The 72-hole tournament wraps up Sunday.
