MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team matched the fifth-lowest team score of the third round Saturday (April 29) at the Big Ten Conference Championship and moved up a spot to seventh place heading into the final 18 holes. The final round of the 72-hole event starts at 8 a.m. CDT Sunday at University Ridge Golf Course.
Five of Michigan's six golfers posted scores of 78 or better on Saturday for a team score of 308. The Wolverines, with a 54-hole total of 917, are in the middle of a tight race for the fifth through ninth positions, with just six strokes separating fifth-place Northwestern (914) from ninth-place Minnesota (920).
Freshman Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) led the charge in the third round with her second straight three-over-par 75, while sophomore Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./North HS) fired a 77. Bowers and junior Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS), who carded an 80 Saturday, are tied for 17th in the individual standings entering the final round.
The other three Michigan participants -- sophomore Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS), junior Amy Talbot (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) and sophomore Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) -- all came in with rounds of 78 on Saturday as the Wolverines were the only team to post five scores in the 70s in the third round.
Purdue expanded to 21 strokes its lead over defending champion Ohio State as the Boilermakers shot 298 for a three-round total of 874. The Buckeyes are second at 895, with Michigan State (898) and host Wisconsin (902) close behind. Purdue's Stacy Orschell, the first-day co-leader, carded a 73 Saturday for a 214 total, and she holds a three-shot edge on teammate and first-day co-leader Kari Damron (217) in the battle for medalist honors.
