Michigan Produces Pair of Wins at Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team competed in its third meet of the outdoor campaign at the Duke Invitational in Wallace Wade Stadium on Friday and Saturday (April 7-8). The Wolverines' weekend efforts resulted in a pair of wins from Michigan's sprint group and several personal records at the non-scoring meet.

Michigan senior Steve Molnar (Menominee, Mich./Menominee HS) got Michigan's weekend off to a solid start by winning the developmental 100-meter dash (the slower of the two 100-meter races) in 10.84. Molnar also delivered a personal-best 21.83 in the developmental 200-meter dash to place runner-up. Michigan sophomore Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS) provided the Wolverines with their other win as he took first place in the developmental 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.56. Josh Sellers (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee HS) also provided a solid effort for the Michigan sprinters by placing runner-up in the developmental 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.07.

Michigan's top performer among its distance runners was junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS), who registered a personal-best 14:10.78 to place third in the 5,000-meter run. Wisniewski was also part of a Michigan trio which owned three of the top eight spots in the developmental 1,500-meter run. John Butsic (Iron River, Mich./West Iron County HS) placed fifth (3:55.66), Dave Cook (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern HS) placed sixth (3:55.86) and Wisniewski placed eighth (3:56.76).

In the field events, junior thrower Nick Rogers (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm HS) provided Michigan with its seventh top-five finish of the weekend as he placed fourth in the shot put, with a mark of 53-7 3/4.

The Maize and Blue return to action next weekend at the prestigious Mount SAC Relays Friday through Sunday (April 14-16) in Walnut, Calif.
