OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The eighth-ranked University of Michigan rowing team's top four boats, including the three NCAA-scoring boats, advanced to Sunday's (May 14) Grand Finals at the Central Region Sprints. A fifth U-M boat advanced to Sunday's Petite Finals.
The varsity eight cruised to the Grand Finals with first-place finishes in its morning heat and afternoon semifinal. The crew raced nearly identical races, taking an early lead with a strong start, extending it into a large lead in the first 1,000 meters and cruising to victory by over a boat-length of open water at the finish. Also advancing to Sunday's Grand Final of the First Varsity Eight race were Texas, North Carolina, Michigan State, Ohio State and Iowa.
The second varsity eight cruised to an open-water victory in the morning heat, and then defeated Clemson by nearly 10 seats in the semifinal. Both times, the boat cruised to victory after taking a large lead in the first 1,250 meters. Also advancing to the Grand Final of the Second Varsity Eight race were Clemson, Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa and Miami (Fla.).
In the remaining NCAA-scoring event, the First Varsity Four, Michigan won its heat to advance directly to the Grand Final. Advancing directly with the Wolverines was Kansas, which won the other heat. Clemson, Indiana, Michigan State and Ohio State all advanced to the Grand Finals after racing in the repechage heats in the afternoon.
In the Second Varsity Four race, Michigan advanced directly to the Grand Final after winning its morning heat by four seconds over Notre Dame, which also advanced to the Grand Final. Also advancing to the Grand Final of the Second Varsity Four race were Clemson, Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan State.
The Wolverines' first novice eight advanced to the Petite Final after placing fourth in the semifinal. In the morning, the boat placed fourth in its heat.
Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State were the only three schools to place all three NCAA-scoring boats in the Grand Finals, setting up a rematch from the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago in Madison, Wis.
Weather conditions for the day varied, as it was cloudy and cooler with a current against the course in the morning and sunny and hot with a current down the course in the afternoon.
