Fans will have a first-hand opportunity to see numerous top-notch male and female swimmers from around the country at the 2000 Key Bank Swim Classic. Some of the athletes scheduled to appear include: former Olympian, NCAA record holder, American record holder and USA Open record holder Amy Van Dyken; former Wolverine Linda Riker (1995-98), an All-American and a six-time honorable mention All-American in the backstroke; Chelsea, Mich., native Adam Messner, who currently swims at Stanford University; former Eastern Michigan standout Mark Leonard, an EMU and Mid-American Conference long-distance record holder; and Tom Malchow, who was a seven-time All-American and a four-time Big Ten Conference champion during his career at Michigan (1996-99). Malchow also captured a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Current Michigan swimmers who will be attending include Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) and Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS). Thompson earned All-America honors in the 400-meter freestyle at this year's NCAA National Championships, while Siciliano was the national champion in the 400-meter individual medley. Siciliano set an American and U.S. Open Record in the 400 IM (4:06.02).
"This is a great event for the Ann Arbor community," said Michigan assistant swimming coach Eric Namesnik. "It is not the type of event that comes through the door every day. We will have athletes from all over the country coming to Ann Arbor to compete."
The Key Bank Swim Classic is the first meet of the summer to get the ball rolling for the Olympic trials. The 2000 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team trials will be held Aug. 9-16 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
