Ex-Wolverines, Coaches Wrestle at U.S. Olympic Trials

Richardson, former Wolverine grappler and current Cleveland State assistant coach, had a third-place showing at 286 pounds, which was the highest among the U-M competitors. He defeated Angelo Borzio 8-0 in the first round, but was beaten by the same score by eventual second-place finisher Stephen Neal. Richardson defeated his next three opponents to place third -- 3-0 over J.R. Plienis, 5-2 over Borzio and a 1:21 fall over Tolly Thompson.
Bormet, a 1994 graduate, defeated Byron Tucker 3-1 in the first round at 167.5 pounds, but was pinned with three seconds left (5:57) in the semifinals by No. 1 seed Joe Williams. Bormet, who was seeded fifth, injury defaulted his last two matches and finished in sixth place at the trials.
Volunteer coaches Kevin Vogel and John Fisher both defeated their first-round opponents and were defeated in their next match. Vogel, No. 4 seed, earned a 10-0 technical fall over Steven Goss at 187.25 pounds and Fisher, a 1985 alumnus, decisioned Troy Steiner 7-5 at 138.75. Vogel was pinned (2:40) by Kenny Owens in the Greco-Roman quarterfinals and lost his consolation match 10-0 to James Short. No. 3 seed Fisher was defeated 6-4 by Bill Zadick in the semifinals, but didn't continue because of injury and placed sixth.
The winners of the trials will represent the U.S. freestyle and Greco-Roman teams at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, on Sept. 24-Oct. 1.
