Among National Scholar-Athlete award winners, Michigan's five recipients tied Creighton University as the most from any NCAA Division I institution. Junior Alison Hickey (Scituate, Mass./Noble and Greenough HS) led the way, as she was recognized academically for the second consecutive season. Receiving the honor for the first time were Koo, senior Jennifer Kinon (Brookside, N.J./West Morris Mendham HS), sophomore Sophie Roberge (Mallorytown, Ontario/Thousand Island HS) and senior Jaime Stilson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS).
Hickey, Johnson, Kinon, Koo and Roberge all spent time in the Wolverines' first varsity eight boat this season. The group helped the boat capture the inaugural Big Ten Conference championship and a second consecutive Central Region championship. They went on to finish fifth at the 2000 NCAA Rowing Championships in Camden, N.J., at the end of May.
The All-America and All-Region awards are designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in at least 75 percent of the season's races in the first varsity boat, and the student-athlete's head coach must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.
For each region, eight rowers and, if nominated, a coxswain received first team honors, with the same number receiving second team honors. The All-America first and second teams were selected by the regional chairpersons following the NCAA Championships from the rowers who had received All-Region first team honors.
