Toman Falls Short in Quest for Olympic Team Berth

BOSTON, Mass. -- University of Michigan senior Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall) narrowly missed a place on the 2000 United States Men's Gymnastics Olympic Team by placing ninth at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials finals on Saturday (Aug. 19) at the Fleet Center.
Toman finished the evening with an all-around score of 55.800. That mark was tabulated with the scores from the John Hancock U.S. Championships and the Olympic Trials Preliminary competition to give him a weighted total of 110.230 and a ninth-place overall finish in the Olympic Team trials.
The 1999 and 2000 NCAA parallel bars champion continued his success on the apparatus, winning the event with a score of 9.775. Toman took the lead by five-hundredths of a point over the second-place finisher, five-time U.S. champion Blaine Wilson.
Toman also performed extremely well on the still rings, finishing fourth with a mark of 9.650. The All-American garnered a 10th-place slot on the floor exercise with a score of 9.350. Earning a 9.200 on the pommel horse, Toman finished in 14th. He placed 16th and 17th on the high bar (8.850) and vault (8.975), respectively.
The 2000 U.S. Olympic team consists of Blaine Wilson, Paul Hamm, Sean Townsend, Stephen McCain, Morgan Hamm and John Roethlisberger. Ohio State University gymnast Jamie Natalie is the only alternate listed at this time.
