ORONO, Maine -- The reigning national runner-up University of Michigan field hockey team started its 2000 campaign off in style with a 2-0 shutout over the University of Maine Black Bears on Saturday (Aug. 26) in front of 1,200 spectators at Morse Field.
Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), last season's leading scorer for the Maize and Blue, put in the first goal when she successfully converted on a penalty corner with 22:28 remaining in the first half.
Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) redirected a long hit from freshman April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) to move the Wolverine advantage to 2-0 with 7:35 left in the first half. Fronzoni's assist was her first collegiate career point.
Michigan displayed stifling defense, allowing goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) to make just one save for her first career solo shutout, and Ashley Thomas (West Chester, Pa./Unionville HS) made a defensive save.
The Wolverines will return to action tomorrow (Aug. 27) when they face the Northeastern Huskies at Parsons Field in Boston, Mass., at 1 p.m.
