Wolverines Drop Season Opener at Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Michigan women's soccer team dropped its season opener to Arizona State by a 4-0 score in the second game of the Sun Devil Classic on Friday (Sept. 1).
The Sun Devils opened the scoring at the 9:44 mark of the first half on a goal by Holly Cohen and did not look back. Arizona netted its second goal of the half in the 34th minute, taking a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Michigan added four shots of its own in the opening half of the game.
With about 11 minutes left in the game, Michigan goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) was flagged with a red card for attempting to tackle a Sun Devil forward approaching the net. Freshman Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) was called in for the ensuing free kick. Arizona State's Stacey Tullock nailed the free kick for the Sun Devils' final score.
Michigan was outshot 25-13 in the game. Stewart made six saves on the night, allowing three goals, while Grech made one save and allowed one goal.
Michigan plays No. 17-ranked Southern California in the third game of the Sun Devil Classic on Sunday (Sept. 3) at 10:30 a.m. MST. The Trojans edged Colorado 1-0 in the first game of the tournament.
