ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With a second-half offensive blitz, the University of Michigan field hockey team took down Ohio University 6-1 on a rainy Sunday afternoon (Sept. 10) at Ocker Field. Freshman April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) highlighted the contest with her first career three-goal effort.
Ohio was a formidable opponent in the first half, holding the Wolverines to just two shots in the first 20 minutes of play. Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) broke the Michigan drought when she scored off a rebounded shot from Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS).
Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) kept her six-game point streak alive, scoring on a penalty corner. Assisting on the goal were Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon HS) and Jeanne Shin (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest HS) at 4:54 to end the first half with a 2-0 lead. Gannon expressed incredible confidence in Michigan's offense. "Once we get going on all cylinders it's very hard to stop us."
The second half was all Michigan, outshooting the Bobcats 19-3. Fronzoni took over the game with three scores in the first 15 minutes. Her third score was created by Rose breaking away and setting up Fronzoni at the net for the easy chip in.
"I was just thinking 'I better not miss this,'" said Fronzoni. "It's a great feeling to score a hat trick; I just wanted to concentrate on hitting the ball on my third goal."
Reid topped off Michigan's potent afternoon, scoring on a penalty stroke with 17:17 remaining. With the score at 6-0, goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) nearly recorded her first career shutout, but Ohio's Andrea Voros put the Bobcats on the scoresheet off a penalty corner at 14:21.
"We played a real good Ohio team today," said head coach Marcia Pankratz. "I'm happy the way we're playing. We're improving in the areas that I like to see. Ohio hung with us real tough in the first half, so it was nice to see how we responded and took it to them in the second."
The Wolverines will be back at home for the second straight weekend when they take on Ball State on Friday, Sept. 15 at Ocker Field at 4 p.m.
