U-M Downs Purdue in Double OT in Big Ten Opener

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Senior goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) of the University of Michigan women's soccer team stopped eight shots en route to a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Purdue on Friday (Sept. 15) at the Purdue Soccer Complex. It was the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams.
Michigan opened the scoring at the 40-minute mark off a Vicky Whitley (Spring, Texas/Klein HS) strike, with an assist going to junior Alissa Shaw (West Carrollton, Ohio/West Carrollton HS). Boilermaker freshman Annette Kent kept her scoring streak intact with a strike at 62:32.
The game remained knotted at 1-1 for over 55 minutes until U-M freshman Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) blasted a goal past the Purdue netminder at the 117:09 mark. The assist went to Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS).
Stewart played 120 minutes for the Wolverines. With the eight saves, Stewart is now Michigan's career saves leader, with 229 in 53 games.
The Wolverines face the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday (Sept. 17) at 1:30 p.m. CDT in Big Ten action from Bloomington, Ind.
