Baylor, U-M Pull Away from Field at Wolverine Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team kicked off the 2000-01 season by hosting the Wolverine Invitational Saturday (Sept. 16) and sits in second place just five strokes behind leader Baylor after the first day of play.
The Michigan Blue team finished with team totals of 323 and 317 for a 640 two-round total, while the Bears shot 320 and 315 for a 635 total. Arkansas-Little Rock (335-328/663) sits in third place after the first two rounds, 23 strokes behind the Wolverines.
Michigan junior Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) wasted no time getting on track in the opening tournament of the year as she sits atop the leaderboard with a three-stroke lead. She carded a 78 in the first round and then an invitational-low 75 in the second round for a 153 total. Baylor's Tara Bateman (78-78/156) and Hanna Svenningson (80-76/156) share second place. U-M sophomore Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) dropped four strokes from the first to the second round and sits in fourth place after firing rounds of 81 and 77 for a 158 total.
Junior Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington North HS) also played well for the Michigan Blue team and is tied for ninth after rounds of 81 and 82 for a 163 total. She is tied with Wolverine senior Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS), who carded rounds of 82 and 81 to lead the Michigan Maize team, which sits in eighth place after back-to-back rounds of 345 for a 690 team total.
The Wolverine Invitational concludes Sunday (Sept. 17) with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the final round at the U-M Golf Course.
