ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Complete dominance described the fourth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team's effort in a 10-1 thumping of Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 19) at Ocker Field. Freshman April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) hatched a quartet of scores and sophomore Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) threw in a hat trick for the Maize and Blue.
The onslaught began five minutes into the game, when Fronzoni put home the first score off a feed by Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) at the net. Fifty-two seconds later, Fronzoni took a pass from Rose to put the Wolverines up 2-0. Fronzoni's other two scores came in the second half at 19:13 and the last goal of the game at 2:07.
"I glad to see our entire team clicking together," said Fronzoni. "When we have momentum it's very hard to stop us. We have the weapons that can keep on coming. I don't stop playing until the final whistle."
Rose achieved her first career hat trick, including unassisted goals at 6:07 of the first half and 9:51 of the second. As Rose set up Fronzoni for her second goal, Fronzoni returned the favor, dishing the ball to Rose for her middle score at 13:28 in the second.
"I was just in good positions and made the shots," said Rose. "This is the first time I have ever scored three goals in any game I have played. It's good to see how well we are playing before we get into the Big Ten schedule."
Rounding out the scoring for the Maize and Blue were Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS), Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) and Kelli Gannon.
Head coach Marcia Pankratz was pleased how her team executed. "You can't tell your players to hold back, I want them to keep on working no matter what the score is. We played a complete game and the results showed. The Big Ten season is going to be tough, but I feel we are ready."
The Wolverines (8-1, 0-0 Big Ten) will be on the road for the first time in three weeks when they open up the Big Ten schedule with a visit to Indiana on Friday (Sept. 22) in Bloomington, Ind. Indiana is coming off a 9-0 defeat to Miami (Ohio) this past Saturday (Sept. 16).
