Gannon's Quartet Tramples Indiana in Big Ten Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The best defense is a good offense. That is the philosophy the fourth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used on Friday (Sept. 22), holding the Indiana Hoosiers without a shot in an 8-0 blanking at Mellencamp Pavilion. Freshman Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) was the star of the game, scoring four goals and adding one assist in the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams.
The Wolverines started off slowly against the Hoosiers, who reinstated their field hockey program this year after a 19-year hiatus. Kristi Gannon opened up the scoring 15 minutes into the first half with the first of her three goals by way of penalty corners. Setting up the corner were Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, S. Australia/Westminister) and Courtney Reid (S. Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon HS). Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) scored an unassisted goal at 8:00 to give the Maize and Blue a 2-0 advantage at the end of the first half.
Kristi Gannon took over the game in the second half, scoring three more goals. Her first was set up by sister Kelly Gannon at 28:37. Kristi Gannon's other two goals were on penalty corners with assists on both going to Reid and Ali Balmer (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata HS).
Besides three assists on the afternoon, Reid also chipped in an unassisted goal at 26:51. Rounding out the rest of the Wolverine scoring were Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) and Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS).
Freshman goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) had an easy day, recording her second career shutout without having to make a save.
The Wolverines (9-1, 1-0 Big Ten) will return to Ocker Field on Sunday (Sept. 24) to take on 16th-ranked Ohio State at noon.
