Michigan Seniors Lead the Way in Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team won eight of 15 events Saturday (Jan. 13) on the final day of the Wolverine Invitational and finished with a 182-156 victory over Big Ten Conference rival Illinois. Notre Dame also defeated the Fighting Illini, 200.5-145.5. The host Wolverines placed first in 11 of the 20 events during the two-day meet.
The Maize and Blue's senior class led the way as All-American captain Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich/Jenison HS) won the 100-yard butterfly (57.42) and All-American Missy Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School) had two first-place finishes, in the 200- and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 1:53.07 and 52.37, respectively.
Sophomore Traci Valasco (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) claimed first in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:06.60. Valasco also had a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 52.37.
Freshman Emily Fenn (Westport, Conn./Staples HS), who finished first in the 500-yard freestyle during Friday's portion of the meet, also came in first place in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a convincing time of 16:51.17.
The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Fenn, Sugar, Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS) and freshman Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales HS) came in first place with a time of 7:36.67. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Crisman, Sugar, Weilbacher and Johnson also came in first ahead of Notre Dame with a mark of 3:30.80.
Freshman Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School), who placed second in the one-meter diving with a NCAA zone qualifying mark of 261.45 Friday, completed another strong performance on the three-meter board with a second-place score of 287.25.
The Wolverines travel to Columbus, Ohio, next Saturday (Jan. 20) to take on Ohio State. The dual meet begins at 4 p.m.
