ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics received five first-place honors from three gymnasts as the Wolverines topped No. 3 Ohio State University 215.500-210.400 on Saturday (Jan. 20) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines snagged 19 top-five finishes in front of 1,103 fans, including two separate 1-2-3 sweeps.
Juniors Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) and Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) contributed heavily to the success of the Maize and Blue, each receiving two first-place honors. Kenna earned the top spot on both the floor exercise (8.850) and the parallel bars (9.000), while Vetere garnered first-place finishes on the pommel horse (9.400) and the high bar (9.350). Vetere and Kenna also performed well on the still rings, earning third (9.150) and fourth (9.100) place, respectively.
Michigan received its final first-place finish from senior Kevin Roulston (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township HS), who accumulated a 9.350 on the vault to take home the event. The Wolverines also received assistance from senior Tim Dehr (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS) as he finished second on both the floor exercise (8.750) and parallel bars (8.950). Tying with Dehr on the floor exercise was sophomore Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS), who earned a fourth-place nod on the high bar.
The Wolverines successfully swept the top three positions on the floor exercise and pommel horse. Kenna, Zimmerman and Dehr finished 1-2-3 on the floor exercise, while Michigan received top-three finishes on the pommel horse from Vetere, sophomore Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), who received a 9.300, and junior Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS), who rounded out the sweep with a 9.150.
