ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A pair of hat tricks by Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) and Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) highlighted the seventh-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team's 9-0 thrashing of Notre Dame on Tuesday night (Jan. 23) at Yost Ice Arena. U-M's top line of Cammalleri, Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) and Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) continued its strong play as each player notched four points on the night.
After goals by Josh Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Cammalleri gave the Wolverines a 2-0 lead 3:02 into the first period, Kosick scored his first goal from the left circle on a slap shot that deflected off an Irish defender and beat Kyle Kolquist at 16:21, and the Wolverines led 3-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Mike Roemensky (White Lake, Mich.) scored his second goal of the season to push the Michigan lead to 4-0 5:27 into the second period. Roemensky took a pass from Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) and fired a shot on net from the right circle that found its way through traffic and past Kolquist. Cammalleri picked up his second goal of the game midway through the period to make the score 5-0 before Koch's eighth goal of the season extended U-M's lead to 6-0.
Kosick picked up his second goal of the game with just 1:13 left in the second period to increase the Wolverine lead to 7-0 heading into the second intermission. Four minutes into the third period, Kosick scored his triple with an assist from Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) to give Michigan an 8-0 cushion before Cammalleri completed his first college hat trick at 12:10 of the third period to round out the scoring. Hilbert assisted on Cammalleri's goal to give him four assists on the night and extend his scoring streak to 15 consecutive games (15-18-33).
Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) made 21 saves during the contest and improved his record to 17-6-4 on the year. The win gives Blackburn eight career shutouts, including four this season. Despite being pulled midway through the second period in favor of Jeremiah Kimento, Kolquist suffered the loss in goal for Notre Dame (5-18-5, 3-12-4 CCHA) and dropped his record to 0-4-2.
Michigan (18-6-4, 12-4-2 CCHA) returns to action Saturday (Jan. 27) in a battle between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the CCHA. The second-place Wolverines face top-ranked Michigan State at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit starting at 7:35 p.m. The contest will be shown live on FOX Sports Net.

-- Mark Kosick's hat trick is the second of his Michigan career. He had three goals in a 6-3 victory at Alaska-Fairbanks his freshman season (Oct. 31, 1997).
-- The 9-0 win is the Wolverines' largest margin of victory since March 8, 1997 (Alaska-Fairbanks, 11-0).
-- Three-Star Selections: 1. Mark Kosick (U-M), 2. Mike Cammalleri (U-M), 3. Josh Blackburn (U-M).
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "This was an exceptional night for the team. It was a good game, and a good step towards Saturday night (against Michigan State). It was a confidence builder. We had to play well to make Saturday's game seem more important, and we did. It was important to have a good start and put our chances in. We got a few goals that might not have been goals on other nights, but we needed those. It was a good game."
On the shutout ... "It was great for (goalie Josh) Blackburn. A team plays for the goalie in the third period and especially the last 10 minutes. I'm glad we didn't give up any cheap goals. The team was not greedy (in the third period) and trying to score more goals at the expense of defense. We played good team hockey."
Sophomore Forward Mike Cammalleri
On his hat trick ... "It was nice to get the hat trick. I haven't had one here yet, and it took some weight off of my shoulders. It was nice, because not a lot of people get them, but all of my goals were a direct result of the work and second efforts by Geoff Koch. He played great tonight."
On preparing for Saturday's game against Michigan State ... "I stopped enjoying this game with about five minutes to go in the game. Momentum is the key for playing well on Saturday, and I think tonight helped us gain a little momentum. Michigan will definitely be focused for Saturday's game."
Senior Forward Mark Kosick
On scoring a hat trick ... "It's been a tough ride the last month and a half. I was getting my chances, but they just weren't going in. It'd be a different story if they had gone in, but my confidence was pretty low because of it. I'm finally starting to score and I want to contribute more."
On playing hard this week ... "Every win is two points, so every game is huge. We're not in first place right now, and we're trying to come from behind (to win the conference). We need to have a few good practices this week and get everyone going to get prepared for Michigan State. They've had our number the past few years, so we need to win."
