Wolverines Snap Spartans Streak in Overtime Thriller

DETROIT -- In a battle of the CCHA's top two teams, the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team defeated No. 1 Michigan State and snapped the Spartans' 23-game unbeaten streak with a 4-3 overtime victory on Saturday night (Jan. 27) at Joe Louis Arena.
With just 1:57 remaining in the overtime, Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.) passed the puck to the middle for Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.), who then fed it to Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) down the right side. Hilbert was hauled down in front of the net by MSU's Brad Fast but from his stomach shot the puck through Ryan Miller's five-hole to give U-M the dramatic win.
The Spartans (21-2-4, 14-2-3 CCHA) jumped out to the early lead six minutes into the first period when Jillson lost the puck at the blue line, giving Michigan State a two-on-one breakaway. Rustyn Dolyny put the puck past Wolverine goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead they carried into the first intermission.
The Wolverines (19-6-4, 13-4-2 CCHA) entered the second period with an extra step in their play and Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) capitalized, breaking the 229:29-minute shutout streak by Spartan goaltender Miller. With John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) working the puck into the Spartan zone, Mink made a pinpoint pass to Langfeld in front of the net to tie the game at one apiece at 2:17.
At 12:39 of the second period Shouneyia put in a spectacular goal -- in the fashion of the infamous "Mike Legg Goal" 1996 that won the ESPY for "Outrageous Play of the Year" -- when he flipped the puck over Miller's shoulder and then batted the puck off the goaltender's back to put the Maize and Blue up 2-1.
The Spartans, who have only trailed three times this season, quickly tied the game three minutes later when Troy Ferguson beat Blackburn on the right corner of the net. The Spartans were ready to take a 2-2 tie into the third period, but Jon Insana capitalized on a turnover and put in a slap shot with 5.7 seconds left, putting MSU back in the lead at 3-2.
Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) didn't let the Spartans have the lead for long as he put in the puck 15 seconds into the third period, tying the game at three. A defensive battle occurred for the next 17:45 until the Spartans got loose in front of the Michigan net, but Blackburn made the save of the game when he stretched out his stick to block an open-net shot, helping send the game to overtime.
Michigan, which pulled to within three points of league-leading Michigan State in the league standings, is on the road next week for a two-game set at Nebraska-Omaha (Feb. 2-3).

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "When you have two great teams play a game like that it's a shame someone has to lose. It was a tough, physical game with two teams that respected each other."
On Josh Blackburn's play ... "He gave up the soft goal, but we were not down on him. He's been a strong point for us all season and we were more determined to get behind him and we knew he would come up big for us and he did."
Sophomore Forward Andy Hilbert
On his game-winning goal ... "This win showed the character of this team. I came around wide and tried to fire the puck on the net. I didn't even know it went in because everyone mauled me. It was a great feeling and probably my biggest goal at U-M."
Sophomore Forward Mike Cammalleri
On the game ... "It was a big win for us, but it's not the biggest because we play them two more times in the regular season. We just will use this as momentum and carry on the rest of the season."
